WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- No. 1 North Carolina opened the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference season with a 7-0 sweep of Wake Forest Wednesday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. The Tar Heels got straight-set singles wins from Caroline Price, Kate Vialle, Ashley Dai, Tessa Lyons, Zoe De Bruycker and Whitney Kay to improve to 10-1 on the year.
The Tar Heels got a pair of doubles victories on courts two and three to grab the afternoon's first point. With Gina Suarez-Malaguti and Lauren McHale unavailable due to injury, Carolina shook up its lineup across the board. Price teamed with Dai on court two for an 8-2 victory before Kay and Vialle triumphed on court three, 8-3. Wake (1-7, 1-0 ACC) got its lone win of the day on court one, as De Bruycker and Laura Slater fell to Kasey Gardiner and Xue Zhang, 8-5.
No. 25 Price continued her perfect spring with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Andrea Retolaza on court three to give Carolina a 2-0 lead early in singles. Vialle made it 3-0 soon after in her first ACC match, a comprehensive 6-0, 6-0 win over Catherine Roach on court six.
No. 101 Dai would provide the clinching win on court five, defeating Brigita Bercyte, 6-2, 6-0. No. 93 Lyons took care of Karen Forman next on court four, 6-4, 7-5, with No. 32 De Bruycker rallying to win the final six games in a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Gardner at the top of the lineup.
No. 19 Kay completed the sweep on court two, besting Zhang, 7-5, 6-4.
Carolina returns home Saturday for a pair of non-conference matches against Winthrop and East Carolina. The Winthrop match is set to begin at 11 a.m. with the ECU match to follow at 3:30 p.m. Live scoring will be available at GoHeels.com and admission is free.
