California Team Page
Dear Friends of Cal Tennis,
In this edition of the Cal Men's Tennis Newsletter we will provide a recap of last weekend's action down in San Diego, an update on the Hellman Tennis Upgrade Campaign, our 2013 Summer Camps registration is now open, and a preview of this week's action.
Campbell Johnson and Chris Konigsfeldt were the top seed at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship.
Pacific Coast Doubles Championships
After playing San Diego State Thursday morning, the Bears travelled north to La Jolla for the 124th Pacific Coast Double Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. A total of three Cal teams reached the open doubles round of 32. The duo of Cal junior Ben McLachlan and freshman Mads Engsted was one of them, but the third-seeded Bears fell to the team of Fresno State head coach Evan Austin and former Fresno State player David Ayoun, 7-5, 6-3. The Cal team of sophomore Nikhil Jayashankar and freshman Wyatt Houghton lost to USC's fifth-seeded Max de Vroome and Eric Johnson. Sophomore Gregory Bayane teamed up with Cal assistant coach Tyler Browne in the open doubles competition, but they lost to Stanford's ninth-seeded Maciek Romanowicz/Robert Stineman, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 64.
The top-seeded California team of senior Christoffer Konigsfeldt and junior Campbell Johnson reached the quarterfinal round of the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament, beating the sixth-seeded Pepperdine team of Sebastian Fanselow and Alex Sarkissian in the round of 16, 7-6(4), 7-6(4). However, the Golden Bear fell on Saturday to the ninth-seeded Stanford pair of John Morrissey and Denis Lin, 6-1, 6-1, ending Cal’s run at the prestigious tournament.
