TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The sixth-ranked women's tennis team (10-1, 2-0 SEC) will host its first Southeastern Conference matches of the season this weekend when it welcomes Arkansas (6-6, 1-1 SEC) and LSU (7-5, 0-2 SEC) to the Alabama Tennis Stadium. Friday's match against the Razorbacks is set to begin at 3 p.m. CT while Sunday's match against the Tigers, which will be played simultaneously with the men's team, will start at 1 p.m. CT.
The Crimson Tide is coming off a weekend sweep of two conference foes in the Mississippi Rebels and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The former was a tense 4-3 win in which the women had to come back from a 0-3 deficit to win four singles matches in a row to bring home the victory. The match against the Bulldogs was a dominant 6-1 victory with the Tide winning the doubles point and three singles matches in a row to quickly clinch the match. Alabama has now won six matches in a row, with half of those wins coming against top-25 opponents.
The women currently have four players ranked nationally in singles, with junior Mary Anne Macfarlane at No. 20, senior Alexa Guarachi at No. 36 and freshman Maya Jansen and Natalia Maynetto at No. 77 and No. 106, respectively. The Tide also holds the No. 4 national ranking in doubles with the duo of Macfarlane and Guarachi.
Arkansas split decisions in its conference opening weekend, beating Kentucky, 4-3, before dropping a 4-3 decision to Vanderbilt.
LSU enters the weekend 0-2 in SEC play, having lost matches to the Commodores and Wildcats last weekend by scores of 4-3 and 7-0, respectively.
Alabama defeated both the Razorbacks and the Tigers last year handily, beating Arkansas, 4-1, and LSU, 4-0. The Tide leads the overall series with the Arkansas, 18-9, but trails the Tigers, 28-12.
Live scoring will be available for both matches this weekend and can be found on the women's tennis schedule page on RollTide.com.
