ATHENS, Ga. – The Rebels had chances to win the doubles point, but No. 9 ranked Georgia rallied to take it and went on to defeat the Ole Miss women’s tennis team 6-1 Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The Rebels (2-7, 0-3) will travel to Knoxville Sunday to face Tennessee at Noon CT. The Volunteers shut out Mississippi State 7-0 for their first SEC win of the year.
After Georgia took the No. 2 doubles match in decisive fashion, 8-1, Julia Jones and Iris Verboven teamed up to post an 8-4 win over Mia King and Makenzie Craft at No. 3 doubles. Caroline Rohde-Moe and Marija Milutinovic held a 5-3 lead against the No. 9 ranked tandem of Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia, but the Bulldog duo rallied to win it 8-5 and clinch the point.
Garcia defeated Jones 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Maho Kowase beat Rebel freshman Mai El Kamash 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 to make it 3-0 Georgia.
Sophomore Erin Stephens put the Rebels on the board when she defeated Fuller, ranked No. 116 in the nation, 6-4, 7-6(6) at No. 4 singles.
The match ended when 39th-ranked Rohde-Moe lost to ninth-ranked Lauren Herring 6-3, 6-3 at the top spot.
“This was a tough loss to a very good Georgia team,” head coach Mark Beyers said. “We had some opportunities to win the doubles point. We battled hard in singles but were unable to capitalize on some leads. Great win for Erin over a ranked player. We have to turn our attention to Tennessee now and try to get a split on the weekend.”
