BATON ROUGE, La. - The Auburn men's tennis team found its way back into the win column Friday afternoon with a 5-2 win over SEC Western Division rival LSU at W.T. "Dub" Robinson Stadium.
Auburn (9-4, 1-2 SEC) picked up its first league win of the season after dropping a pair of matches to top-15 opponents last weekend at home. LSU (5-5, 0-3) remains in search of its initial conference victory.
"It was nice to get a win on the road and get our first SEC win," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. "I thought the guys were ready to play. We got off to a good start in doubles, our number two and three teams did a good job, and our top team got out to a really quick start. LSU came back and pushed us, but it was nice to get the point. Overall, we played solid, but we're not content. We know we've got a tough match Sunday and will probably have to play indoors (at Arkansas), so we've got to be ready for that."
The Tigers got on track early by claiming the doubles point for the first time in SEC play. Freshman Joseph Van Dooren and sophomore Lukas Ollert started things off with an 8-6 win over LSU's Olivier Borsos and Boris Arias at the No. 3 position, and Lucas Lopasso and Dennis Lengsfeld clinched the doubles point for Auburn with an 8-6 win of their own over Roger Anderson and Tam Trinh. Top-ranked Andreas Mies and Daniel Cochrane had a 7-6 lead over 41st-ranked Chris Simpson and Stefan Szacinski when their match was suspended after the point was clinched.
For the second straight match, the top three spots in the lineup came through for Auburn. Mies, ranked 107th nationally in singles, kept the momentum going and put Auburn ahead 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Chris Simpson at the top spot in singles. Down at the No. 6 spot, Van Dooren made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Harrison Kennedy. Ollert provided the clinching point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Trinh at the third singles position. And with the victory secure, Cochrane fought back for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Borsos at the No. 2 spot to give Auburn a 5-0 lead.
LSU avoided a shutout with wins on courts four and five - Szacinski defeated Lopasso, 7-5, 7-5, at the No. 4 spot, and Mark Bowtell outlasted Lengsfeld in a third-set match tiebreaker, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0.
Auburn will look to make it a sweep of the road weekend as the Tigers travel to Fayetteville to face Arkansas on Sunday. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start, and live stats will be available at ArkansasRazorbacks.com.
