STILLWATER, Okla. - The No. 15 Tulsa men's tennis team rallied to defeat No. 64 Oklahoma State, 5-2, Friday at the DeBois Tennis Center.
The Golden Hurricane has now won seven of its past nine matches, and hold a 7-5 record, while Oklahoma State fell to 6-4 on the season.
Tulsa dropped the doubles point to fall behind 1-0. Junior Japie De Klerk and freshman Matt Kirby fell 8-0 at No. 3 doubles, and junior Clifford Marsland and sophomore Alejandro Espejo lost a 8-3 decision at No. 1 doubles to Matt Campbell and Rifat Biktyakov.
The Hurricane rallied to win five of the six singles matches to claim victory. Marsland, ranked No. 84 in singles, evened the match at 1-1 with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over Biktyakov.
TU took a 2-1 lead after Espejo won a 6-3, 6-1 match at No. 3 singles against Campbell.
OSU evened the match after Trevor Hortsmann defeated TU freshman Carlos Bautista 6-3, 7-5, at on Court No. 6
The final three matches went to three sets and the Hurricane found victory in all three tilts. Senior Grant Ive won a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 decision at No. 4 singles against Richard Del Nunzio to propel TU to a 3-2 lead.
TU clinched the match on Court No. 5, as senior Tristan Jackson rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (6) win over Brady Bohrnstedt.
Junior Japie De Klerk, ranked No. 52 in the country, finished the match off with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 triumph over Chris Haworth at No. 2 singles.
TU returns home on Sunday, March 10, with a noon match against SMU.
