AUBURN – No. 14 Auburn improved to 13-1 and earned its third SEC win of the season with a 7-0 win over LSU Friday at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
“I’m happy for the win and I’m happy we got the sweep,” Auburn women’s tennis coach Lauren Longbotham Meisner said. “I think we came out a little bit flat in singles. With a team like LSU, they’re feisty and will make you fight for every point. The first sets in some of the matches were a little bit closer because we weren’t focused. Once we got the first sets on five courts, and Jackie got her second set, we regrouped and played much better in the second sets. I was very pleased with that.”
With the victory, the Tigers equal their conference win total from last season through only three matches. The Tigers last started an SEC schedule 3-0 in 1993 when it began the conference slate 6-0.
In doubles action, the pair of sophomore Emily Flickinger and junior Jackie Kasler defeated LSU’s Keri Frankenberger and Ebie Wilson 8-3 on court two.
Clinching the doubles point and the 1-0 lead for the Tigers was the duo of sophomore Jen Pfeifler and senior Paulina Schippers earning an 8-4 victory over Kaitlin Burns and Ella Taylor at the No. 3 position.
No. 70 freshman Pleun Burgmans and Plamena Kurteva were tied 5-5 against Mary Jeremiah and Ariel Morton at the top spot when doubles play was concluded.
In singles, Kurteva defeated Caroline Hudson 6-4, 6-0 on court six to make it 2-0. At the top spot, No. 70 Burgmans earned a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Kaitlin Burns to extend the lead to 3-0.
Clinching the match for the Tigers was freshman Michala Kucharova winning 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 2 position.
Also winning for the Tigers on court three was Flickinger defeating Ella Taylor 7-5, 6-0 on court three.
Pfeifler won by retirement at the No. 5 position and Kasler finished the shutout with a 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory on court four.
Friday’s win marked the first time in program history that Auburn has swept LSU, 7-0.
Auburn will return to action Sunday, March 10 with a dual match against Arkansas at 1 p.m. CT at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
