LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 7 USC women's tennis team flexed some serious Pac-12 muscle today in opening up conference play with a powerful 7-0 win over visiting Colorado at Marks Stadium. The Women of Troy surrendered only eight games total to the Buffs in singles play, with #27 Zoë Scandalis and Kaitlyn Christian both pitching shutouts. Scandalis tacked up the clincher for the Trojans today, improving USC's overall mark to 12-2 with a 1-0 start to Pac-12 competition.
USC cruised through doubles with efficiency, capturing wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots to lock in with the early advantage. Up on court one, USC's #30 DeSimone/Scandalis shoved their way to an 8-1 win over Sanders/Steur. Moments later, Lao/Olmos finished off the first point of the day with an 8-2 win over Quevado/Sperry, suspending play on court two with Christian/Pulido.
The Trojans took that 1-0 lead and ran with it, streak out to first-set shutouts on four of the six courts and capturing the first sets down the line. Kaitlyn Christian forged a perfect path to a 6-0 , 6-0 own over Carla Manzi Tenorio on court five to bump the Trojans ahead 2-0 in the match. #107 Giuliana Olmos tripped up in just one game during he second set against Dhany Quevedo for a USC leap to 3-0 on Olmos' 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 3 spot.
On courts one and two, USC wrapped up solid wins just moments apart. USC's #27 sophomore Zoë Scandalis got to the finish line first in rounding out another clean slate with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Winde Janssens to clinch the match in putting USC up 4-0 on the Buffs. On court one, USC's #8 senior Danielle Lao pinned up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Julyette Steur to make it 5-0 Trojans with action still going on courts four and six. Freshman Ellie Yates took care of business next from her No. 6 spot, drilling Mazy Watrous with a 6-1, 6-1 decision for a lift to 6-0 on the Buffs. Bringing it all home was USC's #67 Gabriella DeSimone, who held strong for a smooth 6-2, 6-2 win over Erin Sanders on court four, and that wrapped up the 7-0 sweep for the Trojans.
USC now turns to face No. 59 Utah tomorrow (March 16) in a 12 p.m. match at Marks Stadium to continue Pac-12 competition.
