MIAMI - Virginia tennis alumni have had a strong start to the Sony Open, the ATP Masters 1000 series event in Key Biscayne. Somdev Devvarman (Class of 2008) won his first round singles match on Wednesday and the team of Treat Huey (Class of 2008) and Dominic Inglot (Class of 2009) won their first round doubles match on Thursday.

Devvarman, who entered the main draw on his protected ranking, downed world No. 78 Evgeny Donskoy of Russia 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 in the first round. Devvarman rallied from down a set and a break, and from down 5-2 in the second set tiebreaker, to post his first Masters Series win in two years. He will play No. 30 seed Feliciano Lopez on Friday for the chance to likely face world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the third round.

Huey and Inglot opened their tournament with a 6-4, 6-3 win over American stars John Isner and Sam Querrey. They will play the No. 5 seeded duo of Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer in the second round.
