MORAGA, Calif. - Junior Samantha Vickers earned a comeback win at No. 1 singles to propel the No. 25 Tulsa women’s tennis team to a 4-3 triumph over Saint Mary’s on Tuesday.
Vickers, ranked No. 31 in the nation in singles play, won her 10th match in a row, and won her eighth match against a ranked foe as she dispatched No. 18 Jenny Jullien 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
The Golden Hurricane (12-5) began the match by clinching the doubles point. Renata Kuricova and Maria San’tAnna got things rolling with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles, and Vickers and sophomore Isaura Enrique, ranked No. 22 in the nation, earned a 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles to seal the point.
Kuricova gave TU a 2-0 lead after defeating Hannah Liljekvist 6-3, 6-2 on Court No. 6. The Gaels tied the match at two apiece after Sant’Anna lost a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 decision against Jade Frampton at No. 5 singles, and SMC’s Danielle Flores defeated TU’s Michelle Farley 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Freshman Saana Saarteinen put TU up 3-2 with a 7-6, 1-6, 6-2 win against Catherine Leduc at No. 4 singles.
After Enrique fell at No. 2 singles, all eyes turned to Court No. 1 as Vickers gave Tulsa the win in a hard fought match between two top-50 foes.
Tulsa returns home to finish off its regular season with five straight matches at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. TU will host Notre Dame on Friday, March 30, in a 12 p.m. tilt.
