EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern junior Veronica Corning (Beverly, Mass./Pingree School) has been honored as the Big Ten Women's Tennis Player of the Week the Conference office announced Wednesday. It is the first such honor of her career.
Corning was victorious in both singles and doubles for the Wildcats as they nearly knocked off top-ranked North Carolina in Evanston on Sunday.
She teamed with freshman Alicia Barnett at No. 3 doubles to post an 8-4 victory over the team of Tessa Lyons and Lauren McHale.
Corning followed up the effort by handing 23rd-ranked Whitney Kay her first dual meet loss of the season in Kay's 12th match of the year. The Wildcat improved to 4-1 against ranked opponents this year by notching a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
With the win, Corning vaulted into the ITA national singles rankings this week, coming in at No. 96.
Northwestern (8-6, 2-1 Big Ten) is ranked No. 11 in this week's ITA team rankings and returns to action at 1 p.m. Central time Wednesday as it takes on Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The Wildcats return home this weekend to take on Minnesota at 11 a.m. Saturday and Wisconsin at noon Sunday at Combe Tennis Center.
