Stanford, Calif. - After rain postponed Saturday's men's tennis match between UCLA and Stanford, the Bruins and Cardinal resumed play on Sunday afternoon, with UCLA taking a 5-2 win at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Play was halted on Saturday with the score tied at 1-1. Stanford (7-7; 0-2 Pac-12) had won the doubles point, while UCLA's point came in singles, as junior Clay Thompson downed Daniel Ho, 6-1, 6-1 at court No. 5.
When play was suspended on Saturday, UCLA's Dennis Novikov was just one game away from closing out his match with Nolan Paige at court No. 2. The Bruin sophomore barely broke a sweat on Sunday, needing to win just one game to defeat Paige, 6-4, 6-4, putting UCLA up 2-1.
Another straight-set win, this time by Adrien Puget, quickly put the Bruins up 3-1. Puget downed Maciek Romanowicz, 6-2, 6-2 at court No. 2. Freshman Karue Sell clinched the win for the Bruins at court No. 6, where he beat Trey Strobel, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, to give UCLA a 4-1 lead.
Like Sell, sophomore Dennis Mkrtchian also rebounded after dropping the first set, as he battled back to defeat Robert Stineman, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 to put UCLA up 5-1.
In the final match of the afternoon, Stanford's John Morrissey upset 14th-ranked Marcos Giron, 6-3, 5-7, (10-8) to make the final score 5-2 in favor of UCLA. With the win, UCLA improves to 16-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-12.
UCLA's next match will be on Friday when it hosts Utah at 1:30 p.m.
