EUGENE, Ore.—The No. 44 University of Oregon men’s tennis team lost to the California Golden Bears 4-3 Friday afternoon at the UO Student Tennis Center. The Ducks fall to 14-4 overall on the season and 1-2 in Pac-12 play, while the Bears advance to 9-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
“This was an extremely hard fought battle," said head coach Nils Schyllander. "We had our chances early in a couple of those third sets in breka points to get the momentum to move ahead, but we let them off the hook. It came down to a couple of close points. We need to convert those break points early in the third sets. If we do that, it would be a different outcome."
The Ducks lost their first doubles point of the season, breaking a 17 match streak, as they lost the matches on Courts 2 and 3. On Court 1, Oregon’s top duo of Jeff Mullen and Robin Cambier defeated the 26th ranked duo in the country consisting of Campbell Johnson and Christoffer Konigsfeldt 8-6 to advance to 15-1 on the season. Daniel Sardu and Aaron Clissold fell to the 40th ranked duo in the country as Mads Engsted and Ben McLachlan defeated them 8-3 on Court 2. On Court 3, Alex Rovello and Daan Maasland dropped their match to Chase Melton and Gregory Bayane 8-6.
In singles, Cambier fell in the top spot to No. 44 Ben McLachlan 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, while his doubles partner Mullen fell to No. 46 Johnson 6-3, 6-2 on Court 2. Maasland dropped a tight match with No. 66 Konigsfeldt 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on Court 3. Rovello ended up victorious for the Ducks in the fourth spot as he defeated Bayane 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and Sardu handled Engsted, winning 7-6(3), 6-4 in the fifth spot. In the final spot, the Ducks earned a victory as Lova Randriamampandry topped Melton 1-6, 6-4, 5-5(ret.).
"I'm very proud of how hard we fought. The guys showed that they believe that they are good and that they expect to win regardless of who we play. I'm convinced we'll show back up tomorrow and get fired up and hopefully get out of there with a W," added Schyllander.
Oregon returns to action on Saturday as it takes on No. 47 Stanford at the UO Student Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. A full recap with statistics will be available following the match on the UO athletics website, www.goducks.com.
