EUGENE, Ore.—The No. 44 University of Oregon men’s tennis team defeated the No. 47 Stanford Cardinal 4-3 at the UO Student Tennis Center on Saturday. The victory marks the first time in school history that the Ducks have defeated the Cardinal. Oregon advances to 15-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play, while Stanford falls to 8-8 overall and 1-3 in the Pac-12.

“Today was just an amazing team effort and it validates all the hard work that has been put in over the years,” said head coach Nils Schyllander. “On top that, to have a freshman clinch it makes me so proud of everything that this group stands for.”

The Ducks dropped their second consecutive doubles point after winning 17 in a row to start the season. Oregon’s top duo of Jeff Mullen and Robin Cambier fell to John Morrissey and Denis Lin 8-3 after taking down the No. 26 duo in the country against California on Friday. Daniel Sardu and Aaron Clissold dropped their match to Robert Stinemen and Maciek Romanowicz 8-6 on Court 2, while the Ducks earned a victory on Court 3 as Alex Rovello and Daan Maasland took down Jamin Ball and Daniel Ho 8-2.

In singles, Cambier fell to 54th ranked Morrissey 6-3, 6-4 in the top spot, while his doubles partner Mullen took down Romanowicz 6-3, 6-3 on Court 2. Maasland topped Stineman 6-4, 7-6(5) On Court 3, while Rovello defeated Ho 6-1, 7-5 on Court 4. Daniel Sardu fell in a hard fought battle on Court 5 to Trey Strobel 6-7, 6-2, 6-3. Clissold handled Jamin Ball in the final spot, winning 6-0, 7-5.

Up 3-2, Oregon had the fans on edge as two nail-biters took place on Courts 3 and 5 to determine the result of the match. Maasland surrendered a 5-2 lead in the second set to eventually go into a tiebreak situation, which he won 7-5 to clinch the match for UO.

Oregon hits the road next to take on UCSB, USC and UCLA in Southern California on Thursday-Sunday.
