WAMEGO, Kan. – No. 15 Texas Tech rolled to a 5-2 win over No. 50 Kansas State at the Wamego Recreation Center to stay atop the Big 12 Conference women’s tennis standings on Friday.
Texas Tech (16-4, 6-0) opened the day by winning the doubles point for the 19th time in 20 matches this season.
The surprise of the day came when No. 30 Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic snapped Texas Tech’s No. 13 tandem of Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo’s 11-match winning streak with an 8-3 win at No. 1.
Texas Tech battled back, as Rashmi Teltumbde and Nikki Sanders coasted past Ivana Kubickova and Amina St. Hill, 8-2 at No. 2. The point was decided when Texas Tech’s Caroline Starck and Elizabeth Ullathorne pulled past Carmen Borau and Ana Gomez Aleman, 8-5.
Kansas State’s No. 11 Niedermayerova evened the team score with a 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 94 Adams at No. 1.
The Lady Raiders then answered with straight-set wins from Ullathorne at No. 4 and Starck at No. 6 to give Texas Tech a 3-1 lead.
Kansas State answered with Bonacic’s win at No. 2 over Kilgo, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4, cutting the Lady Raider lead 3-2.
Teltumbde clinched the win for Texas Tech with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Kubickova at No. 3 and Sanders added the final point with a 6-1, 7-6 (12-10) win over Borau Ramos at No. 5.
The No. 15 Lady Raiders return to action on Sunday in Lawrence, when they face Kansas at noon.
