CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 10th-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team is hitting the road this weekend for a pair of matches in Virginia to close out its regular season schedule.
The Hurricanes face 68th-ranked Virginia Tech on Saturday at 11 a.m. before taking on 17th-ranked Virginia on Sunday at noon.
The Canes (16-4, 7-2 ACC) are coming off of a weekend at home in which they faced two Top 10 opponents.
Against top-ranked North Carolina, the Tar Heels were able to end UM’s streak of securing the doubles point at 10 matches. Singles wins by Clementina Riobueno (No. 121) and Melissa Bolivar put Miami on the board, but UNC ultimately prevailed, 5-2.
Two days later against No. 9 Duke, the Hurricanes were dominant with a 4-0 sweep.
The duo of Riobueno and Monique Albuquerque took home an 8-5 victory on Court One to secure the doubles point for Miami. After Deborah Suarez dominated court six 6-1, 6-0, Stephanie Wagner (No. 53) defeated the Blue Devils’ 23rd-ranked Hanna Mar on Court One, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch the 4-0 victory.
Wagner is now 8-1 on the season at the court one position, while Mar was the highest ranked opponent she has defeated. She and Riobueno lead the team with 19 singles wins apiece.
Virginia Tech (13-9, 2-7 ACC) is currently on a seven match losing streak, last beating Boston College on March 16. Last weekend, the Hokies faced two Top 25 teams, getting blanked 4-0 by 19th-ranked Georgia Tech and falling to 14th-ranked Clemson, 5-2. Freshman Kelly Williford and junior Tea Ivanovic secured two points for the Hokies, winning the first and last singles decisions of the day.
Virginia also recently fell to Clemson, as the Tigers snapped their six match winning streak. The Cavaliers (14-8, 7-2 ACC) won the doubles point, but Clemson jumped out to a 3-1 lead with singles victories. Boca Raton, Fla. native Hana Tomljanovic cut the lead to 3-2 with a win of her own, a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Ani Miao. Clemson would clinch the win in the next match, though UVa’s Caryssa Peretz closed out the match with a victory on court six.
The Canes faced these teams in consecutive matches last season as well and proved dominant, defeating Virginia, 6-1 and Virginia Tech 7-0.
