BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 10th-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team has won 11 of its last 12 matches after defeating Virginia Tech, 4-1, Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The match started at 11 a.m. with the temperature at a chilly 46 degrees, not something the Miami players are accustomed to in balmy South Florida.

“We were able to get a solid result in tough conditions,” said Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “This was definitely the coldest weather we have played in this season and the wind made it pretty rough. I was glad the team kept their cool and worked through it.”

Doubles wins from the teams of Melissa Bolivar and Kelsey Laurente  (8-1) and Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno (8-5) gave the Canes a 1-0 lead.  The latter duo has now won a team-leading 13 double wins in dual matches this season and have won 10 straight.

Albuquerque wasted no time in singles play, as she ousted the Hokies’ Kelly Williford, 6-1, 6-2. The win improved the sophomore’s record to 7-3 over the last 10 matches.

After 53rd-ranked Stephanie Wagner dropped just her second match of the season out of the No. 1 position, 112th-ranked Clementina Riobueno gave the Canes a 3-1 advantage with her straight-set victory over Isel Martinez-Marcos, 6-1, 6-3. The freshman becomes the first player this season to earn 20 wins.

Junior Melissa Bolivar once again claimed the match-clincher, using an outstanding third set to defeat Carol Kahoun on Court 5, 6-1, 4-6, 6-0. Like Riobueno, Bolivar has won an impressive 10 consecutive singles matches, improving her dual match record to 16-2 on the season.

The Hurricanes wrap up their regular season at 17th-ranked Virginia on Sunday at noon.
