CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In its regular season finale, the 10th-ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team suffered just its fifth loss of the season, 4-1, at No. 17 Virginia Sunday at the Snyder Tennis Center.

Each singles match that was played to completion went to the Cavaliers (16-8, 8-2 ACC). Freshman Deborah Suarez lost for the first time in her career in a dual match, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6. Then Miami’s (17-5, 8-3 ACC) three ranked players of Kelsey Laurente (No. 85), Stephanie Wagner (No. 53) and Clementina Riobueno (No. 112) fell at Nos. 2, 1, and 3, respectively.
Monique Albuquerque and Melissa Bolivar were each in their third sets when the match was clinched on Court 3.

“Virginia was simply better than us today,” said Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews. “They were better tougher at 1, 2, 3 and 6. I thought it looked good for us at the remaining spots but we couldn’t beat them to the punch.”

As is has most of the season, the Hurricane doubles teams played well and secured the early point. Brittany Dubins and Wagner were the first to win, 8-4, out of the No. 3 position. Riobueno and Albuquerque dropped their set on Court 1, but Bolivar and Laurente clinched to doubles point with and 8-4 victory at No. 2.

“I thought we played well at doubles, especially at No. 3,” said Yaroshuk-Tews. “Brittany really did a great job.

“I’m looking forward to getting to Cary and starting the tournament.”

The ACC Championship field will be announced by the conference office Monday afternoon. The championship will be held April 25-28 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.
