OJAI, Calif. - California sophomore Zsofi Susanyi, junior Anett Schutting and freshman Klara Fabikova advanced to the singles championship quarterfinal round as the Pac-12 Championships opened on Thursday at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club. The three Golden Bears won two matches each to reach Friday's quarters, with Schutting and Fabikova vying with each other for a spot in the semifinals.

All 10 Bears took part in Thursday's action, as seven competed in the singles invitational, and senior Tayler Davis and sophomore Cecilia Estlander reached the round of 16.

Friday's Schutting-Fabikova battle is a rematch of last fall's USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships semifinal bout between the two, with Schutting winning, 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-0.

"They're both playing well," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "Having three players in the singles quarterfinals is great. Hopefully we'll have two more in the quarterfinals of the singles invitational."

In the singles championship, Susanyi, the tournament's top seed, opened with a round of 32 win over Washington State's Andjela Kankaras, 6-4, 6-3, and then topped Washington's Grace Ysidora, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 16. Susanyi will play UCLA's Kyle McPhillips on Friday at noon.

Fabikova and Schutting will also lock horns at noon on Friday. Schutting, the tournament's second seed, defeated Oregon's Patricia Skowronski, 6-2, 6-2, in the morning and then moved past USC's 76th-ranked Gabriella DeSimone, who retired with an injury with Schutting leading 4-3 in the first set. The seventh seed, the 62nd-ranked Fabikova eased past Arizona State's Leighann Sahagun, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 32, before taking three sets to move past Utah's 93rd-ranked Tereza Bekerova.

"Zsofi played better today," Augustus added. "She hasn't played two matches in one day in a while. To win the second match convincingly against Washington's No. 1 and really move the ball around was good to see. All three of them dominated today. Klara had a bit of a tougher time in her second match but got it back in the third set. She's really showing she's maturing as the season goes on and is playing better."

Estlander and Davis each won one match on Thursday after a first-round bye in the singles invitational. The fourth-seed, Davis took out Arizona State's Joanna Smith, 6-2, 6-0, in the round of 32, while Estlander edged Washington's Riko Shimizu, 5-7, 7-6(5), 1-0(10-6). Davis will play Washington's Natalie Coronel and Estlander will take on Stanford's 86th-ranked Ellen Tsay on Friday in the round of 16, with both matches slated for 11 a.m. starts at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club.

Also on Friday, the doubles championship and doubles invitational begin at the Pac-12 Championships, which conclude on Sunday.
