FORT WORTH – TCU women’s tennis sophomore Stefanie Tan was selected to compete in the singles competition at the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships May 22-27 the NCAA announced Wednesday. The singles tournament, which will consist of 64 student-athletes, will take place at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill.

“I am excited for Stefanie,” TCU head coach Dave Borelli said. “She had a great year, and it is a great opportunity for her to go up against the best in the country. Hopefully we will have a few more Stefanie Tan-type players in the next few years so we can be represented at this event even more.”

Tan, a sophomore from Bishan, Singapore, is the 18th woman in TCU history to qualify for the postseason singles competition. The Horned Frogs’ last NCAA Championships singles entry was Nina Munch-Soegaard in 2010. TCU was represented in the NCAA Championships doubles tournament at the NCAA Championships last season by Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith.

Tan currently has a 21-10 singles record in 2012-13, with a 15-7 mark in the spring season. She spent the majority of 2013 at No. 1 singles, recording a 14-6 record. Tan has seven wins over ranked opponents on the season, including a win over then No. 11 Petra Niedermayerova of Kansas State.

“She played No. 1 which meant she was always playing good players,” Borelli noted. “In the Big 12, you have to play well in every match, you just can’t peak for a certain few opponents. That is something we are learning as a team and Stefanie has been in that position throughout the entire season at No. 1 singles.”

In TCU’s last 10 matches, Tan has faced nine ranked opponents. In TCU’s most recent match at the Big 12 Championships against Oklahoma State she took down No. 63 Malika Rose in three sets.

“The matches she has lost have been competitive,” Borelli noted. “She has been in every match she has played this season, and she is difficult to put away. Three of her losses in Big 12 play have been three-set matches.”

Tan and the Horned Frogs will begin team competition for the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships on May 11 with a first round matchup against North Texas. TCU and the Mean Green will square off at 9 a.m. in College Station, Texas at Texas A&M’s Mitchell Tennis Center.
