CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's team dropped a tightly contested doubles point and the first three singles matches off court in a 4-0 loss to seventh-ranked UCLA in the NCAA Sweet 16 in a match that ran into the wee hours of Saturday (May 18) at the Atkins Tennis Center.

UCLA grabbed the first point of the match with doubles wins at No. 3 and No. 2. After the Bruins recorded an 8-2 win at No. 3, Michigan's No. 1 pair of sophomore Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) and junior Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) evened the score with an 8-6 win. With the match tied at 4-4, the U-M duo ripped off three straight games to take a 7-4 lead. UCLA won the next two games, before Michigan held on the serve of Bektas for the win.

At No. 2, Michigan's partnering of sophomore Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) and senior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) jumped out to a 5-2 lead. UCLA won the next three to tie the match at 5-5. Each team stayed on serve for the next two games to keep the match tied, this time at 6-6. The teams then exchanged breaks on the next three games as UCLA went up 8-7 with a chance to serve out the match. U-M held two break points but could not come through on either as the game headed to deuce. The Bruin duo scored the next two points to record the 9-7 victory for the doubles point.

The Bruins extended their lead to 2-0 with a straight-set win at No. 6 when the match switched to singles. Within moments of each other, UCLA recorded wins at No. 2 and No. 1 to seal the 4-0 shutout. Michigan won just one set in the match, a 6-3 win by Lee in the first set at No. 4.

Bektas, Bolender and freshman Ronit Yurovsky (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) will participate in the NCAA Individual Championships, set for May 22-27. The draw will be announced on May 21.
