URBANA, Ill. - Yannick Hanfmann of USC defeated Boise State's Andy Bettles, 6-2, 6-4 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Singles Championship, Wednesday.
Hanfmann controlled the first set starting with the first game, breaking Bettles' serve and holding his own to go up 2-0. Hanfmann would stretch the lead late in the set and go on to win 6-2.
In the second set, the two held serve until the fifth game when Hanfmann broke Bettles to take a 3-2 lead. That break would be enough as Bettles could not find one of his own and dropped the set 6-4.
Bettles, a junior, finished with a 30-10 overall record including a 23-6 dual mark playing at the No. 1 spot for the Broncos. He was the 11th player in Boise State history to qualify for the Singles Championship.
