NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma's Guillermo Alcorta advanced in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship that began Wednesday at the Atkins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill.

Alcorta, ranked No. 58 by the ITA, earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over No. 60 Campbell Johnson of California-Berkeley in the first round.

The Spainard, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Big 12 Championship, will face No. 11 Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine Thursday.

OU sophomore Dane Webb also competed Wednesday. Webb fell 6-1, 6-1 to Southern Cal’s Roberto Quiroz.

Alcorta and Webb were key members of a Sooner team that earned its second straight Big 12 Championship title and completed its run through the NCAA Championship in the Sweet 16 less than one week ago.

University of Oklahoma women’s tennis duo Hermon Brhane and Whitney Ritchie begin play in the doubles portion of the tournament Thursday. The All-Big 12 pair faces Oklahoma State’s Kanyapat Narattana and Malika Rose in the round of 32.
