TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -The No.26-ranked Florida State women's tennis team moved to 11-4, (3-2 ACC) on the year after it defeated No. 35-ranked NC State 4-0 on Saturday.
In doubles, senior Amy Sargeant and Mia Vriens dominated on court three, defeating Chole Smith and Sophie Nelson, 8-1.
On court two, sophomore Daneika Borthwick and junior Kerrie Cartwright had match point with Cartwirght serving, however the NC State pair of Rachel James-Baker and Elisha Hande fought it off, tying the match 7-7.
Down 0-40, Borthwick and Cartwright came back to force deuce before moving ahead 8-7.
Borthwick proved she was tough to beat on serve as she closed out the match for the 9-7 win, sealing the doubles point for the Seminoles.
Just as Borthwick and Cartwright delivered the clinching blow, senior Francesca Segarelli and junior Krisitna Schleich faced match point from the team of Joelle Kissell and Tatiana Illova. The dual was halted with Kissell and Ilova ahead 7-6 after winning four straight games to take the lead.
"Doubles was big today," head coach Jennifer Hyde said. "It's going to be big every time. It was great to head into singles with that 1-0 cushion. It certainly instills a bit of confidence in everyone."
In singles, Florida State won five of six first sets.
"We've talked about getting that jump start in singles to those first set leads," Hyde said. "I was proud of the team today because they didn't back down after winning that doubles point. They came out blazing and won those first sets. They stepped up their games and played aggressively."
The Seminoles took a 2-0 lead after Cartwright captured her ninth victory of the year against Hande, 6-3, 6-2 on court five.
On court four, Sargeant showed her dominance as she defeated James-Barker, 6-2, 6-1.
Sealing the victory on court three for the Seminoles was Vriens. She defeated Nicole Martinez with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
"Any win feels good," Vriens said. "It was great to get the clinch. I've been struggling a little bit lately but it was awesome to get a win on the board, get my confidence up and help the team."
With that victory, Vriens moves to 17-9 on the year.
"She's just a tough player," Hyde said. "She's been battling a little bit of adversity, but she's playing with so much heart. She's doing her best for the team and I was really proud of her effort today."
The other three matches left in play were stopped once Florida State had won the match.
On court one, (No. 31) Borthwick dropped her first set to (No.35) Kissell. In the second, Borthwick fell behind 3-1, before finding her rhythm to take five straight games winning the set to force a third.
Borthwick was out to a commanding 2-0 lead when the match was called.
Segarelli (No.109) took on Illova (No.92) on court two. After winning a tight first set 7-5, Segarelli was up 4-2 when play was stopped.
On court six, Schleich was tied 3-3 in the second set after winning the first 6-2 against Smith.
