CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – The No.32-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team fell to 17th-ranked Virginia, 4-0 at the Synder Tennis Center today. The Seminoles drop to 12-8 (4-6 ACC) on the year.
“A tough one today,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “We battled hard and just came up short.”
In doubles, junior Kristina Schleich and sophomore Kerrie Cartwright cruised to victory on court three, as they defeated Li Xi and Maria Fuccillo, 8-1.
Although the Seminoles had the edge, Virginia was able to snatch the doubles point after squeezing past in the remaining two matches.
Sophomore Daneika Borthwick and Francesca Segarelli fell on court one to Erin Vierra and Stephanie Nauta in a tight, 8-6 decision.
The No.89 pair of Hana Tomljanovic and Julia Elbaba outlasted senior Amy Sargeant and Mia Vriens, 9-7 on court two.
“We’ve been doing well in doubles and had some good chances today,” Hyde said. “We just didn’t execute when we needed to.”
In singles, Vriens retired after falling in the first set of her match to Tomljanovic, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Cavaliers.
After dropping a tough, 7-5 first set, Sargeant (No.110) lost the second, 6-1 and the match to Xi on court four.
Borthwick (No.57) battled back and steamed through the second set after dropping the first, forcing a third against Elbaba (No.12). However, Elbaba pulled away 6-3 in the decisive set, clinching the match for Virginia.
Play was stopped once the match was decided.
“We jumped out to early leads on a few courts, but we couldn’t hold on in those first sets,” Hyde said. “You can’t do that against a top 20 team.”
On court two, Segarelli (No. 106) was down against Nauta (No.77) 6-4, 4-2 while Schleich was ahead in the second set on court six against Caryssa Peretz 7-5, 3-4.
Cartwright evened her match against Vierra, 5-5 on court five after dropping the first set, 7-5.
“We’ve got to recover quickly,” Hyde said. “We’ll take a quick jaunt over to Blacksburg for our last match of the 2013 regular season.”
