Senior men's tennis players>Cedric De Zutter and Joe Salisbury were named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes for the 2012-13 season. It is the third consecutive ITA Scholar-Athlete Award for De Zutter and is the second award for Salisbury.
De Zutter was honored after posting a 3.57 GPA in his junior campaign. A Sport and Leisure Management major, De Zutter was also a second-team All-C-USA doubles team honoree after the 2012-13 season. He helped Memphis win its first-ever C-USA championship title in April and then helped the Tigers advance to the NCAA Round of 16 in the tennis championship tournament. Memphis finished the season as the No. 20 ranked team in the country. A member of the Dean's List, the C-USA Academic Honor Roll and a C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medalist, De Zutter returns to Memphis this fall for his senior season after picking up his first career ITF doubles championship in July in the Belgium F6 event. He is one of three current Tigers to carry professional ATP points back to Memphis with him for the upcoming collegiate season.
Salisbury is a two-time first team all-conference doubles honoree and this past season, was also honored as a second team all-conference singles player. He was voted to the C-USA All-Academic team following a junior campaign that saw him become the first Memphis player in school history to advance to the ITA All-American main draw in singles. Salisbury tied with sophomore Connor Glennonwith a team-high 23 singles victories on the season and teamed with fellow junior David O'Hare to finish the year as the No. 39 ranked doubles team in the country. That duo won nine straight matches to end their season, including three wins at No. 1 doubles in Memphis' NCAA tournament run.
A business economics major, Salisbury is also a multiple-time honoree on the Dean's List, the C-USA Academic Honor Roll and as a C-USA Academic Medalist. Like De Zutter, Salisbury also returns to Memphis this fall for his senior season carrying ATP points. He picked up two wins in a Great Britain Futures event over the summer, upending the No. 315 ranked player in the world to advance to the quarterfinals and earn two professional points.
Both Salisbury and De Zutter are on track to graduate in May of 2014 and make up a four-person senior class that returns to Memphis this fall. Memphis opens its fall slate Sept. 20-22 at the University of Virginia Ranked +1 Tournament in Charlottesville.
Memphis, who posted its highest-ever team ranking at the end of last season, returns seven letterwinners, including the four-person senior class of De Zutter, Salisbury, Johnny Grimal and David O'Hare. They are joined by juniors Connor Glennon (the 2013 C-USA Player of the Year) and David O'Leary. Those returnees will be joined by redshirt freshman Jarryd Woog this fall. Woog won the ITA Summer Kickoff Event at Wichita State earlier this summer and was a quarterfinalist at the Alabama ITA Summer event in July.
