The University of Memphis men’s tennis team went 4-2 on the final day of the Olympia Fields Invitational in Chicago, Sunday, to wrap up the open of their 2013-14 season. Memphis sent just four players to the first tournament of the season.

Senior Johnny Grimal went 3-1 in singles play during the weekend, bouncing back from a loss to Illinois’ Farris Gosea in three sets on the first day of the tournament to sweep his next three matches. Fellow senior David O’Leary and freshman Jarryd Woog picked up solid wins on the weekend, posting 2-2 marks in singles play. O’Leary lost his opening match to defending national champion Virginia’s Justin Shane, the No. 117 ranked player in the country. He got back on the board against another Virginia player, Johnny Cornish, then closed out the weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jacoby Lewis of Notre Dame on Sunday. Woog won his first career singles contest, upending Notre Dame’s Nicholas Montoya, 6-2, 6-4, then adding a win over Kentucky’s Maks Gold for his first two career singles victories.

In doubles, Woog teamed with senior David O’Hare and the duo went a perfect 3-0 through the doubles draw, picking up wins over two duos from Notre Dame and one from host Illinois. Memphis’ other doubles entry, the team of O’Leary and Grimal entered the tournament as the No. 54 ranked doubles team in the country, and picked up wins over two doubles teams from Notre Dame to sandwich around a loss to the doubles team from Illinois.

The Tigers are back in action again this weekend with another split-squad schedule. O’Hare will be joined by teammates Cedric De Zutter,Connor Glennon and Joe Salisbury to participate in the Virginia Ranked +1 tournament in Charlottesville, beginning Friday. Only ranked singles and doubles teams are admitted into the draw at the prestigious Virginia event. This is the second straight season Memphis has been invited into the tournament draw.
