LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Andy Bettles is the last man standing for Boise State as he has advanced to the USTA/ITA Men’s Tennis Mountain Region Championships singles semifinals in Las Vegas. Bettles was one of three Broncos who reached the quarterfinal round where both Thomas Tenreiro and Garrett Patton fell.  Boise State has advanced two of its three doubles teams, Bettles/Tenreiro and Patton/McClain, into Saturday’s main draw quarterfinal round following victories today, while the third has reached the consolation quarterfinals. Boise State went 8-4 in singles today with two of those losses coming at the hands of Broncos in head-to-head meetings, overall the blue and orange is 25-6 in singles at the tournament and 7-1 in doubles.

Andy Bettles is the lone Bronco remaining as he advanced into Saturday’s semifinals. The Somerset, England, native had a scare in today’s round of 16 where he was forced to rally from one set down to UNLV’s 16th-seeded Tamas Batyi before defeating the Rebel in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. The senior then followed with a relatively easy victory in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-0 over BYU’s Francis Sargeant who was seeded sixth. Bettles will now face Sam Iftikhar from New Mexico, ranked 115th nationally and is the No. 4 seed, at 1 p.m. (Mountain) on Saturday.

In the first of two Bronco versus Bronco matches  Thomas Tenreiro, the No. 8 seed, defeated freshman Brendan McClain, the No. 21 seed, 6-2, 6-1 to move into the quarterfinal round against New Mexico’s Samir Iftikhar. Tenreiro battled hard but lost in three sets to the Lobo 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-0, ending the possibility of a Bettles versus Tenreiro match in the semifinals on Saturday. The sophomore ends his tournament with a 3-1 singles record and is now 6-4 on the year. McClain’s loss to Tenreiro ended his run at the regional with a 3-1 singles record as well.

The second head-to-head match between Boise State players saw junior Garrett Patton, the No.14 seed, down sophomore Toby Mitchell 6-4, 6-3. Patton then advanced into this evening’s quarterfinal round where he was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by Henry Craig the No. 9 seeded player from Denver. Patton finished the regional at 4-1 in singles, while Mitchell went 3-1.

In the consolation rounds for singles both Brian Foley and Abe Hewko won their first match of the day before falling in the evening to end their participation in singles at the event. Foley defeated Montana’s Mikolaj Caruk in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, then lost to New Mexico’s Rodolfo Juaregui in his second three-set affair of the day 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Hewko opened by downing Juan Canales from BYU 6-2, 7-5, before falling in three to Sean Levesque of Utah State 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Foley and Hewko both finish the tournament with 3-2 singles records.

All three doubles teams remain alive in Las Vegas with two reaching Saturday’s main draw’s quarterfinals and the other in the consolation quarterfinals. Bettles and Tenreiro won their round of 16 contest this morning 8-4 over Montana State’s Kenny Dodd and Javier Martin-Morillas. They now face Rodolfo Juaregui and Hayden Sabatka from New Mexico.

Patton and McClain are also in the main draw quarterfinals following a tough 8-7 victory today over another New Mexico tandem in Mads Hegelund / Andy Van Der Vyver. The Broncos advance to face BYU’s second seeded duo of Andrey Goryachkov and Francis Sargeant tomorrow.

Foley and Mitchell had to win a couple of matches today to reach the consolation quarterfinals tomorrow. The pair opened with a tight 8-7 victory over Alex Clinkenbeard and Aidan Talcott from Denver. They followed tonight with an 8-4 win against Montana State’s Diego Campos and Harry James. Foley and Mitchell survived to reach tomorrow’s quarterfinals against a team to be determined as of this story being released.
