LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Boise State’s doubles team of Garrett Patton and Brendan McClain advanced to the doubles final Saturday afternoon at the USTA/ITA Men’s Tennis Mountain Region Championships where they fell 8-2 to the fifth-seeded team of Jose Bendeck and Cristobal Ramos from Idaho. Boise State’s Andy Bettles was defeated by Samir Iftikhar of New Mexico in Saturday’s semifinal round for singles by the score of 6-4, 6-1. Bettles the 21st-ranked player nationally was the final singles player for the Broncos entering the day, he finished his run at the regional with a 4-1 record.
Boise State concluded its participation at the tournament on Saturday with Bettles’ loss and the defeat of all three doubles teams. Overall through the four days at the regional the Broncos were solid going 25-7 in singles matches and 10-4 in doubles.
In doubles the Boise State duo of Patton and McClain reached the final by winning two matches earlier in the day. The Broncos defeated Andrey Goryachkov and Francis Sargeant the No. 2 seeds from BYU by a 8-5 margin. They then downed Utah’s Cameron Lee and Cedric Willems 8-3 in the semifinals to advance to the title match where they lost.
Boise State’s doubles team of Bettles and Thomas Tenreiro, the No. 3 seeds, had also reached today’s quarterfinal round but fell in a tie break to Rodolfo Juaregui and Hayden Sabatka from New Mexico 8-7 (6).
The only other Broncos matches were by the third doubles team of Brian Foley and Toby Mitchell who reached the consolation semifinals today. They opened with a quarterfinal victory over New Mexico’s Bryan Cunningham and BYU’s Nikki Rae by the score of 8-6. They then faced the doubles team of Liam Gendron and Austin Mayo from Northern Colorado, falling 8-3.
