Flushing, N.Y. - UCLA senior men's tennis player Clay Thompson won one of the biggest national tournaments of the college tennis season on Sunday, posting a straight-set victory in the singles final at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA's Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Thompson, the tournament's sixth-seeded player, downed eighth-seeded Jared Hiltzik of Illinois, 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday. In five matches in New York, Thompson did not drop a single set. He becomes the second Bruin player to win an ITA Indoor title, joining back-to-back winner Benjamin Kohlloeffel, who won the championship in 2005 and 2006.

Thompson, who qualified for the Indoors after winning the consolation singles title at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in October, closes out the fall by winning 15-straight matches to up his record to 18-1. His winning streak started at the All-American Championships and continued when he won the Southern California Intercollegiates last week at UCLA. Thompson's only loss of the fall was to Oklahoma's Axel Alvarez in the first round of the All-American Championships, a loss he avenged this week by beating Alvarez in the semifinals in New York.

In addition to winning the tournament, Thompson was also named the ITA Indoor Sportsmanship Award winner.

UCLA junior Marcos Giron was also a winner on Sunday, taking home the consolation singles title with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Baylor's Patrick Pradella, who was the top-seeded player in the entire tournament.
