Yannick Hanfmann claims singles crown; Max de Vroome & Eric Johnson win dou...

The USC men's tennis team made it a clean sweep of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships today. Junior Yannick Hanfmann brings home the singles crown after his 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 win over Alex Sarkissian in Malibu. Soon after he grabbed his big victory, four of his teammates set up for battle at Marks Stadium in an all-Trojan doubles title match. In the end, Max de Vroome and Eric Johnson reigned supreme with an 8-4 win over teammates Roberto Quiroz and Ray Sarmiento. That makes it back-to-back regional doubles titles for Johnson, who paired with Hanfmann last year in the doubles realm.

This year, junior Johnson teamed up with sophomore de Vroome as the No. 5 seeded team in the 2013 doubles draw. That tandem packed some punch, winning four decisive matches -- including a semifinal win over teammates Nick Crystal and Michael Grant -- in the run to the championship bout. Meanwhile, top-seeded vets Quiroz and Sarmiento were also in strong winning form in their opening rounds as they, too, punched their ticket to the title match. It being an all-USC final, the match was moved from Malibu, where Pepperdine was hosting the tournament, to USC's home courts at Marks Stadium. The Trojan showdown -- the second straight all-USC doubles final in the ITA Southwest Regionals -- featured de Vroome/Johnson and Quiroz/Sarmiento staying on serve until a break interrupted things. de Vroome and Johnson took a 6-4 lead when Sarmiento was broken, and the momentum shifted into their favor. One last break sealed the deal, and de Vroome and Johnson had their 2013 championship trophy in the books.

Yannick Hanfmann, meanwhile, remained embedded in Malibu for the final day of regional play, squaring off against Pepperdine's own #23 Alex Sarkissian in the title match. #18 Hanfmann got up a break in the first set and held on to take the early advantage, but Sarkissian answered back in taking the second and forcing a third. Hanfmann was ready to head back to L.A. by then, it seemed. The junior buckled in and took no prisoners in the final set, shutting out Sarkissian for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 victory that sealed the singles crown for the Trojan.

USC's next fall action will take them to Orlando later this week for a trip to the Clay Court Invitational from Oct. 24-27.
