COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Third-ranked and Southeastern Conference-leader Texas A&M faces another momentous challenge Sunday as the Aggies play host to fifth-ranked Georgia at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. First serve is at 11 a.m.
A&M, the only undefeated team in the SEC with an 8-0 conference mark, will break the year-old school record for consecutive wins with a victory against the Bulldogs. The Aggies tied the record Friday with their 13th straight win in a 4-2 victory against No. 23 Tennessee. A&M also improved to 15-1 overall, as well as 7-0 in home matches, following the win against the Lady Vols.
Georgia, 14-2 overall, is only one game behind the Aggies at 7-1 in SEC play after defeating No. 58 Missouri, 4-0, Friday in St. Louis. It was the fourth consecutive win for the Bulldogs, whose only conference loss was at Florida on March 15. Their only non-conference loss was against No. 2 UCLA at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Sunday’s match-up features two of the nation’s top-10 doubles teams as A&M’s seventh-ranked duo of Stefania Hristov and Cristina Stancu is slated to face fourth-ranked Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia of Georgia. The Aggie duo went up against the third-ranked team in the nation on Friday, facing Tennessee’s Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely. The Lady Vols led, 5-4, but play was stopped after A&M won on the Nos. 2 and 3 courts to clinch the doubles point.
In addition to their highly-ranked doubles teams, Texas A&M and Georgia both boast nationally ranked singles players. Senior All-American Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar leads the Aggies with a No. 5 ranking, and teammates Nazari Urbina and Stancu are No. 55 and 68, respectively.
Georgia’s Lauren Herring, the 2012 SEC Freshman of the Year, is No. 8 in singles, and the Bulldogs’ Maho Kowase and Silvia Garcia are No. 18 and No. 86, respectively.
A&M will be aiming for its first victory against the Bulldogs, who are 7-0 in the all-time series. The teams last met in 2008 with then-No. 6 Georgia defeating A&M, 6-1, at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
