THREE RED RAIDERS SELECTED FOR NCAA SINGLES AND DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
LUBBOCK, Texas – A day after earning its fifth-straight bid into the team NCAA Championship on Tuesday, Texas Tech men’s tennis had three players selected to compete in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. Juniors Raony Carvalho and Gonzalo Escobar will compete in the singles draw, while Carvalho and junior Rafael Garcia will play doubles.
This is the second-consecutive year that all three have qualified for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championship and the third-straight year for Carvalho to play in both the singles and doubles draws.
The singles and doubles portions of the NCAA Championships run May 25-30 at the Taube Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University. The team competition of the championships will be held a week earlier from May 19-24.
All matches shall be the best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches.
Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a record of a minimum of 13 completed singles matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
Automatic qualification into the Division I doubles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible doubles teams ranked in the ITA top 60 for eligible/entered doubles teams. For conferences with more than one doubles team within the ITA top 60 eligible/entered doubles teams, the subcommittee applies the NCAA selection criteria to determine which doubles team is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All doubles teams must have a record of a minimum of 10 completed doubles matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.
Being two of the 64 players selected for the singles draw, Carvalho is currently ranked 23rd in the country in singles and Escobar is No. 26. Carvalho owns a 21-1 record in duals and Escobar is 14-10.
Carvalho and Garcia are the 20th-ranked duo in the nation with an 11-10 duals record this spring. The pair is one of 32 teams to compete in the doubles bracket.
Next week, No. 22 Texas Tech heads to Waco, Texas, for the NCAA Championship first and second rounds. The Red Raiders play No. 43 Rice on Fri., May 13, at 10 a.m., at the Baylor Tennis Center.
