UCLA Women Team News
Ninth-Ranked Bruins Down ASU, 5-2 in Tempe
Monday, 04/08/2013

Tempe, Ariz. - The ninth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team made it out of Arizona with a pair of wins over the weekend, capping off its trip to the desert wtih a 5-2 victory over No. 22 Arizona State on Saturday at the Whiteman Tennis Center. The Bruins, who also beat Arizona, 5-2 on Friday, improve to 15-4 overall and 6-2 in the Pac-12. With the loss, the Sun Devils see their record fall to 15-3 and 5-2 in conference action.

Although UCLA lost the doubles point to start the day, things evened up before a single ball was struck in singles play, as the Sun Devils were forced to forfeit the No. 6 singles position due to an injury to their No. 2 singles player Desirae Krawczyk.

Sophomore Kaitlin Ray would then put the Bruins up 2-1 when she quickly dispatched of Ebony Panoho, 6-0, 6-4 at court No. 5. The Sun Devils, however, answered right back with a win of their own at court No. 1, where 23rd-ranked Jacqueline Cako upset Robin Anderson, 6-2, 6-3. It marked just the fourth loss of the year for the nation's third-ranked player.

Unfortunately for the Sun Devils, Cako's victory was the last win they would get on the afternoon, as the Bruins took the remaining three matches in straight sets. Wins by Kyle McPhillips, Catherine Harrison and Courtney propelled UCLA to the 5-2 win.

Next up for UCLA is a road match at Oregon on Feb. 12 in Eugene.
