Tennis Defeats Minnesota to Advance at NCAAs
Arizona’s No. 28-ranked women’s tennis team (16-8) defeated No. 35 Minnesota (16-9), 4-1 in the first round of NCAA Regionals to advance to the second round for the first time since 2006.
The Wildcats came out strong, winning the doubles point after senior Natasha Marks (Nottingham, England) and sophomore Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) earned a convincing 8-1 victory at the No. 1 spot. Sophomores Susan Mc Rann (Dublin, Ireland) and Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) were not far behind in their 8-3 defeat at the No. 3 spot.
“We are very happy with this win,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “The girls did a great job against a team we didn't know much about. We played solid in the doubles and were able to come away with the point quickly.”
In singles play, the Wildcats fought at every spot, as Marks, Stubbe and Smyth all came away with wins to seal the match.
Marks earned the first singles victory for Arizona in her defeat of No. 123 Alexa Palen for her sixth win against a ranked player this season.
Stubbe defeated Tereza Brichacova in straight-sets and Smyth wrapped up the match with her victory over Doron Muravnik, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
“In singles, it looked like we were going to close fast, but Minnesota battled hard and made us get a little tight in the second sets,” Maes said. “In retrospect, I think it was good we were challenged, because it will help us as we move into the next round.”
The Wildcats will advance to the second round to play No. 7 North Carolina on Saturday, May 12 at 3 p.m. ET.
