ATHENS-----University of Georgia’s Kate Fuller has been named the SEC Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Fuller helped seventh-ranked Georgia go 2-0 last week, posting wins over Butler and 24th-ranked Yale. A native of Suwanee, Ga., she went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles. She notched her first career match-clinching victory in the Yale match at No. 6 singles. Also, she paired with junior Chelsey Gullickson at No. 1 doubles and clinched the first team point to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
“Kate has worked extremely hard and improved her game during her first season of college tennis,” said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. “She is contributing in various spots in the singles lineup and we’re very pleased with the way she and Chelsey have played doubles. They have a number of big wins already this year and are ranked in the top 10.”
The Fuller/Gullickson tandem is ranked ninth nationally. They are 10-1 overall and have won seven in a row. Fuller is on a five-match winning streak in singles and owns an overall record of 12-7.
The Bulldogs (10-1, 4-0 SEC) will return to action Friday in Baton Rouge against No. 56 LSU (7-7, 3-1 SEC) at 4 p.m. ET. Georgia will be back in Athens Sunday when it will play host to No. 12 Arkansas at 1 p.m.
