Pair of Bulldogs Earn ITA Scholar-Athlete Distinction

ATHENS----University of Georgia sophomore Kelli Jordan and freshman Maho Kowase earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Monday.

A native of Tifton, Ga., Jordan is a pre-medicine major while Kowase, a native of Kashiwa, Chiba, Japan, is studying business management. In 2011, they helped the Bulldogs post a 19-5 record and a final national ranking of No. 8. Also, Kowase led the team with 31 singles wins and was named first team All-Southeastern Conference.

In order to qualify for ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).

Jordan and Kowase are among the eight returning letterwinners for the Bulldogs. The fall semester at UGA begins Aug. 15. Georgia will play host to the 2012 NCAA Tennis Championships in May.
