BLOOMINGTON, IND.-----Four Bulldogs will have a chance to win a singles flight Sunday at the Hoosier Classic.
In flight one, Georgia’s Chelsey Gullickson and Maho Kowase will battle for the title Sunday after posting another victory Saturday. Gullickson, ranked ninth nationally, defeated Karla Bonacic (Kansas State) 6-4,6-3. Kowase, who is ranked 56th, upset No. 35 Petra Niedermayerova (Kansas State) 6-3,6-3.
Bulldog senior Nadja Gilchrist advanced to the final of flight two after posting a 6-3,6-2 win over Alecia Kauss (Indiana). She will face Carolyn Chupa (Indiana) Sunday after she edged Georgia sophomore Kate Fuller 7-6(7),6-3. In flight three, Bulldog freshman Lauren Herring advanced to the final with a 6-4,7-5 victory over Katherine White (Notre Dame). Up next Herring will face Micah Hermsdorf (Abilene Christian). Also in flight three, Georgia sophomore Alina Jerjomina fell to Chrissie McGaffigan (Notre Dame) 6-1,6-2. In flight four, Shannon Murdy (Indiana) defeated Georgia sophomore Rachael Hart 6-0,6-3.
“This is the first event of the fall for Chelsey and Nadja, and they are in position to win their singles flight and they won all four of the doubles matches so we’re pleased about that,” said Georgia coach Jeff Wallace. “Maho had a very good win over a ranked player and now gets to play Chelsey in the final. Also, Lauren has a chance to win her singles flight. Kate and Lauren had a couple of tight doubles matches that didn’t go their way, but overall we had a decent showing.”
In the round-robin doubles draw, the 15th-ranked duo of Gullickson and Gilchrist concluded the event with a 4-0 mark after collecting two more wins Saturday. They beat Kellner/McGaffigan (Notre Dame) 9-8(1) and Chupa/Klyczek (Indiana) 8-2. The Kowase/Hart tandem went 1-1 Saturday while the 20th-ranked team of Fuller/Herring went 0-2. The Kowase/Hart team beat Kauss/Garre (Indiana) 8-3 and then lost 8-6 to Sanders/White (Notre Dame). The Kansas State duo of Niedermayerova/Trousilva edged Fuller/Herring 9-8(5). Then, the Bulldog team fell 8-6 to Sanders/White (Notre Dame).
Overall, Georgia entries went 4-3 in singles and 3-3 in doubles Saturday. The tournament concludes with the final round of singles Sunday starting at 10:30 a.m. ET.
