Georgia Takes Down No. 19 Clemson
CLEMSON, S.C.—The No. 6 Georgia women’s tennis team beat to No. 19 Clemson 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center in Clemson, S.C.
Georgia won the doubles point, and followed with four singles wins to pick up its third dual match win of the season.
“I thought it was a great match all the way around,” said head coach Jeff Wallace. “It was good that we could get a road match in before [ITA National Team Indoors]. I thought we fought hard and played outstanding. It was a really good college tennis match. Our team kept fighting and fighting, and I just really felt like to come back and win two [singles] matches in three sets was a great test for us and I thought we handled it really well.”
Georgia got an early 1-0 match lead by winning the doubles point. The Georgia duo of Lauren Herring and Mia King were first off the court with a 8-4 win over Ani Miao and Romy Koelzer. Shortly later, Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia clinched the doubles point with a 8-4 defeat of Yana Koroleva and Tristen Dewar. The Bulldogs’ No. 22 pair of Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase were trailing 7-5, but the match was suspended because the doubles point had already been clinched.
In singles, Herring gave Georgia a 2-0 lead after beating No. 32 Yana Koroleva, 6-4, 6-3. It’s Herring’s sixth win in a row and 10th this year versus a ranked opponent. Clemson cut into the Georgia lead when No. 77 Beatrice Gumulya beat Georgia’s Garcia 7-5, 6-2. Fuller, ranked 54th nationally, came from behind to beat No. 69 Romy Koelzer 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. With the win, the Bulldog junior improves to 16-3 this season. She is 9-1 in three-set matches since the beginning of her sophomore campaign. Kowase clinched the match with a three-set, come from behind, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Clemson’s Liz Jeukeng. With the win, Kowase improves to 21-5 this year.
With the match outcome already decided, King beat Dewar 6-2, 6-3 and Kimbell fell to Miao, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
Georgia improves its lead in the all-time series 25-19.
