Nebraska Cruises Past Indiana for 20th Win
Hoosiers, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon, securing the team's 20th win this season and their tenth win over a ranked opponent. The Huskers' (20-2, 6-1 Big Ten) win over the Hoosiers (15-6, 4-3 Big Ten) places them at only two wins away from the program record for wins in a season (22, 2010).
The Huskers got off to a fast start in doubles play, capturing two quick wins at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The No. 2 pairing of Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholt (NU) took the first victory, sweeping Kayla Fujimoto and Evgeniya Vertesheva (IND), 8-0. Izabella Zgierska and Janine Weinreich (NU) secured the doubles point with their 8-5 victory over Leslie Hureau and Shannon Murdy (IND) at the No. 3 position.
Indiana would manage to pick up a win at the No. 1 position. Sophie Garre and Katie Klyczek (IND) edged out 40th-ranked Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein, 8-6 to give the Hoosiers their lone doubles victory.
Nebraska carried their momentum into singles play, capturing four consecutive wins to allow the Big Red to clinch the match victory. 40th-ranked Weatherholt picked up the first singles point for the second day in a row, downing Indiana's 99th-ranked Hureau 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 singles.
Weinstein pushed Nebraska's lead to 3-0, battling past Carolyn Chupa (IND) at the No. 4 position. After edging her opponent 7-6 in the first set, Weinstein swept Chupa 6-0 to clinch the win.
117th-ranked Veresova bounced back from her singles loss yesterday to pick up a victory in No. 2 singles over Indiana's Vertesheva in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Her win gave Nebraska a 4-0 lead and allowed the Huskers to clinch the match over the Hoosiers.
NU wasn't done yet, as Madeleine Geibert handed Indiana's Klyczek a 6-3, 6-3 victory in No. 3 singles to move Nebraska's lead over the Hoosiers to 5-0. The match would wrap up with Indiana wins at the No. 5 and 6 singles positions, putting the final score at 5-2.
Husker fans will have plenty of opportunities to see the team in action in the next two weeks, as Nebraska will return home for three conference matches in the next two weeks.
The Big Red will first host No. 15 Michigan in a key Big Ten matchup next Friday, April 13 at 3 p.m. NU will then face Michigan State on Sunday, April 15 at noon before wrapping up their regular season home slate against No. 33 Minnesota on Friday, April 20 at noon. All three matches will be held outdoors at the NU Varsity Courts on 17th and Vine Street.
