NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame women's tennis team will compete in a talent-packed field this weekend at an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kick-Off Weekend event in Lincoln, Neb.
More than 60 teams will be competing for 15 vacant openings into February's ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship at 15 university sites over the weekend. Host universities for the ITA Kick Off Weekend were determined by 2012 year-end ITA National Team rankings.
The Irish (2-0), slotted No. 18 in the current ITA Women's Division I National Team rankings, open the two-day tournament Saturday against No. 22 Georgia Tech (1-0) at 11 a.m. (ET) at the University of Nebraska Tennis Center. The winner of the match will advance to play the victor of No. 17 Nebraska (2-0) against No. 23 Tennessee in the championship draw Sunday at 2 p.m. (ET).
Notre Dame enjoyed a successful opening weekend to the 2013 season, downing Bowling Green 7-0 before picking up a big 4-3 win at No. 24 Illinois. Junior Jennifer Kellner went 2-0 in singles play, which included a 6-3, 6-0 win over No. 59 Allison Falkin of Illinois. Sophomore Molly O'Koniewski has won the first two matches of her Irish career, including a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) come from behind victory over Bowling Green's Katie Brozovich (Jan. 18).
