NOTRE DAME, Ind. - University of Notre Dame junior Britney Sanders has been named BIG EAST Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Sanders (Ontario, Calif./Ontario Christian), the No. 42 player in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, came back from a 6-0 first set deficit against then No. 13 Ema Burgic of No. 19 Baylor to win 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 in Saturday's 4-2 Notre Dame triumph inside the Eck Tennis Pavilion. She continued the momentum the next day at No. 60 Indiana, battling back from a 6-7 (3-7) first set against Leslie Hureau to emerge with a 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-4 verdict and clinch a 4-3 Irish comeback win.
Sanders is the second Notre Dame player to win conference player of the week during the dual season. Fellow junior Jennifer Kellner received the award during the week of Jan. 21.
Notre Dame hosts three matches this week at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Irish entertain Western Michigan Thursday at 5 p.m. and No. 66 DePaul Saturday at 3:30 p.m. before closing the weekend with a showdown against No. 2 Duke Sunday at 11 a.m.
