Sooners Conclude Longhorn Invitational
NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma men’s tennis player Dane Webb lost in the Singles A Draw final at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, Sunday, Nov. 4. The two OU tandems that made it to the finals of the Doubles Draw opted not to play.
Princeton’s ITA No. 67 Matija Pecotic topped ITA No. 57 Webb 7-6, 7-6 to win the finals match at the invitational.
Pecotic is the current Division I Northeast Regional champion.
“Dane lost a very close match to a guy that’s top five in the country,” assistant coach Bo Hodge said. “He’s playing some of the best tennis he has ever played. We are expecting him to have a breakout year.”
Sooner tandems Costin Paval and Webb and Peerakit Siributwong and Leonard Stakhovsky made it to the doubles finals. The team decided not to play because Paval was still recovering from a small injury he sustained during competition Saturday.
“Overall, we had a great weekend,” Hodge said. “I think we will have some of the strongest doubles teams in the country this year.”
The Sooners conclude fall play at the USTA/ITA Indoor National Championships that begin Thursday, Nov. 8.
Redshirt junior Guillermo Alcorta will represent OU in singles play as the USTA/ITA Central Region singles champion.
Alcorta and Alvarez Llamas will compete after winning the USTA/ITA Central Region Doubles Championships. The tandem of Paval and Webb will also compete as at-large selections.
