The Toreros will return home to face UC Irvine Wednesday

Tucson, Ariz. - The San Diego Men's Tennis team dropped a tough decision (5-2) to #40 University of Arizona Sunday, Feb. 22nd at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Arizona.
The Wildcats (8-1) earned an early advantage by winning the doubles point, propelling them towards an eventual match win over the Toreros. At No. 1, sophomore Dean Jackson and senior Chris Coetzee gave USD a quick win by defeating Pat Metham and Francois VanderMerwe, 8-2. But the Cats came roaring back, earning a victory at No. 2 doubles from Andres Arango and Andres Carrasco who defeated newcomer Nicola Bubnic and sophomore Nils Schive, 8-4. Although San Diego put up a strong fight at No. 3, novice Juan Devillier and junior Charl Wolmarans fell to Jay Goldman and Ravid Hazi.
Arizona went on to win the first three singles matches. The No. 4 position was the first match to finish when Hazi topped Bubnic, 6-4, 6-3. Then Carrasco defeated Coetzee at No. 3, 6-3, 6-3, giving the Wildcats a lead of 3-0, needing only one more win to clinch. Arango secured the victory with a 6-4, 7-6 defeat of Wolmarans at the No. 2 position.
San Diego received wins from Jackson at No. 1 (df. Jay Goldman, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5) and freshman Tom Wolff (df. Pat Metham, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3). Arizona's Jason Zafiros improved his singles winning streak to nine when he defeated Nils Schive 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-5.
The Toreros will be in action Wednesday, Feb. 25 at home when they face UC Irvine at 1:30 p.m. PT.
