David Gustafsson is in his first year as assistant tennis coach at USC Upstate and his third overall. He was a member of the Spartans men's tennis squad for two seasons prior to his stint as a coach.
Gustafsson helped lead USC Upstate to national prominence as a junior, helping the Spartans to the Peach Belt Conference co-Regular Season Championship in 2003 with a 17-1 singles record and an 18-4 doubles mark. He helped lead the Spartans to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and a No. 12 final national ranking. Last year, he finished the season with a 17-6 singles record and a 16-5 mark in doubles as USC Upstate advanced to Nationals in Altamonte Springs, FL, and finished ranked seventh in the country.
Prior to coming to USC Upstate, Gustafsson was a standout on the Vincennes Junior College team in Indiana. He helped the squad to a No. 4 national ranking both years and won the national championship in doubles as a sophomore. He finished his sophomore year ranked No. 4 in singles and earned Team Most Valuable Player honors.
A native of Oskarshamn, Sweden, Gustafsson was an accomplished juniors player, finishing third at nationals in the 18s. He also won his state (Scania, regional) championship en rout to his third-place finish at nationals.
Gustafsson has been a junior instructor during the last two summers in his native Sweden, assisting his juniors coach at several summer camps.
Gustafsson is working on the final requirements for his undergraduate degree in Marketing. His younger brother plays tennis for the University of Louisville.
