No. 2 USC Men Breeze Through Another Double Day
Monday, 02/04/2013

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 2 USC men's tennis team served up another batch of doubly trouble for two visiting opponents today at Marks Stadium. In the Trojans' second doubleheader in less than a week, USC opened the day with a 6-1 win over San Francisco and mirrored that score in the afternoon in beating LMU 6-1 to wrap up the busy day for the Trojans. USC improves to a perfect 7-0 on the year with today's sweep.
Double winners on the day were USC's Michael Grant and Max de Vroome, who each cruised to straight-set wins to aid the Trojan cause in both matches. Grant was the clincher in both affairs, first from the No. 6 spot against USF and then from court five against LMU. Emilio Gomez and Ray Sarmiento tag-teamed court one today, with Gomez winning over USF's Thai Tu to start the day's singles play, and the Sarmiento stepped in at No. 1 against LMU for a 6-1, 6-2 win over Nicholas Bjerke that made it 3-0 Trojans in that one. The lineup adjustments also rotated from Roberto Quiroz at the No. 2 slot with a 6-1, 6-1 win over William Schumacher of USF, to Yannick Hanfmann in the LMU matchup for a 6-2, 6-2 win over Othar Kordsachia.
Eric Johnson played at No. 3 against the Dons' Rich Van Hout and posted a 6-2, 6-1 win. He gave way to de Vroome on court three in the afternoon match, as the USC freshman continued his winning ways with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over LMU's Felix Van Kann. Jonny Wang would wind up with a split on court four, falling in a 10-point tiebreaker in the USF match before rebounding with a smooth 6-1, 6-1 win against LMU's Todd Volmari. Michael Tang took over the No. 6 position for his second career match as a Trojan, but took a loss there.
USC's doubles teams were efficiently successful in both matches. USC's top pair of Hanfmann/Sarmiento followed up a shutout in the first match with an 8-2 win in the second to put USC on a path to victory. At No. 2 for both contests, de Vroome/Quiroz blasted their USF foes 8-4 and clocked and 8-1 win against LMU to leave court three's matches suspended.
USC now turns to host California and Stanford this weekend. The Trojans face the Bears at 1:30 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 8) and then take on Stanford at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 9) at Marks Stadium.
