ORLANDO -- Less than a week after squaring off against one another in doubles action, USC's Roberto Quiroz and Max de Vroome will do battle once more. This time, it's a semifinal collision between the two Trojans at the USTA Clay Court Invitational at Disney, as opposed to the home courts of Marks Stadium that they battled on for the ITA Southwest Regional Doubles Championship on Monday. Tomorrow in Orlando, Fla., de Vroome takes on Quiroz, who reigns as the defending singles champ out at the Clay Courts.
The Trojans took a hefty load of six players out to Orlando to get some time on clay. Four Trojans - de Vroome, Quiroz, Robbie Bellamy and Michael Grant -- fought through the first two rounds to score slots in the Round of 16. Quiroz and de Vroome were the only two to bust through to the quarters, where de Vroome today pulled out a three-setter and Quiroz locked in with straight sets to advance to tomorrow's semifinals.
In doubles, all three Trojan tandems registered first-round wins. In the Round of 16, USC's Grant/Quiroz and de Vroome/Johnson pulled through with wins to play in today's quarterfinals, but both were ousted. Winners of the ITA Southwest Regionals de Vroome/Johnson were barely edged out in their quarterfinal 8-7 (3), while Grant/Quiroz had a close one as well, falling 8-6.
