FLUSHING, N.Y. -- The lone Trojan standing in the men's draw at the ITA National Indoor Championships, senior Ray Sarmiento rolled his way to the semifinal round of singles play at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Sarmiento wrapped up his second day of action in New York with a 7-5, 6-2 upset of No. 4 seeded Austin Smith of Georgia in last night's quarterfinals. That had followed a morning upset of top-ranked Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee. Today, Sarmiento had another tangle with a tough opponent in Illinois' No. 8 seeded Jared Hiltzik in the semifinals. Sarmiento forced the issue, putting up a fight for that spot in tomorrow's title match, but Hiltzik netted the win with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) final over Sarmiento.
