Jonny Wang Ousted In SoCal Intercollegiate Quarterfinals
Monday, 11/18/2013

USC junior Jonny Wang was the Trojans' lone soldier competing at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships this week in Westwood. The No. 5 seeded Trojan made his way through to the singles quarterfinals before falling to the tournament's top seed.

Wang kicked off the SoCal tourney with a gutsy three-set win over BYU's Andrey Goryachkov in the opening Round of 32. Wang held his ground in the third set to win it 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 and move along to the Round of 16. There, Wang fought through a tight first set with UC Irvine's Ryan Cheung before blasting Cheung in the second to win it 7-6 (5), 6-1.

That put the junior into the quarterfinals against top-seeded UCLA senior Clay Thompson. It was a good battle between the Trojan and the Bruin, but Thompson would hold strong on his home court to beat out Wang 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

The next order of business for USC tennis is a journey to Flushing Meadows, N.Y. for several Trojans competing in the ITA National Indoor Championships from Nov. 7-10.
