No. 13 Texas tops Oklahoma State, 5-2
Sunday, 04/01/2012

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 13 Texas (14-6, 1-1 Big 12) swept the doubles session and won four of six singles matches on its way to a 5-2 win over Oklahoma State (7-9, 0-2 Big 12) Sunday afternoon at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

The Longhorns utilized a strong effort in doubles play to sweep the three doubles matches and assume a 1-0 lead.  At third doubles, UT’s Ben Chen and Soren Hess-Olesen broke the serve of OSU’s Brandon Champagne and Trevor Horstmann early in their match at third doubles and cruised to an 8-2 victory.

UT’s Alex Hilliard and Sudanwa Sitaram trailed 5-4 in their match at second doubles against the Cowboys’ Christopher Haworth and Eric West before breaking for a 6-5 lead.  The Horns held on for an 8-6 win to preserve the doubles point.  Texas’ 27th-ranked tandem of Chris Camillone and David Holiner edged OSU’s Vlad Bondarenko and Rifat Biktyakov in a tiebreaker at first doubles, 7-4 to complete the doubles sweep.

Texas needed little time to clinch the victory over the Cowboys.  Holiner posted his eighth consecutive win, as he registered a 6-0, 6-2 win over OSU’s Horstmann at fifth singles.  Hilliard staked Texas to a 3-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Champagne at sixth singles.  Texas clinched the victory at first singles, where the 64th-ranked Hess-Olesen defeated the Cowboys’ Bondarenko, 6-3, 6-0.

OSU picked up wins at third and fourth singles before UT’s Sitaram closed out the win with a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over Biktyakov at second singles.

Texas resumes conference play on Wednesday, April 4 when it visits Baylor.

On the win
I thought we had some good performances. Soren (Hess-Olesen) played really well at the top. We took care of business.  The conditions are getting tougher (at this time of year).  We played in some significant heat and wind today, so we have to get ready to face that as we go forward.

On Wednesday’s match at Baylor
It’s always a tough one.  We always have a challenge with Baylor. They always have great teams, so I expect a very tough match on Wednesday.  Hopefully, we will get some guys healthy and we will go over there and be ready to go.
